Ladies corner (know your body parts)
When ladies meet this way, we talk about any and everything. From our stingy boyfriends to the other lady who is being bullied by her boyfriend. But there is an all important topic we never talk about and that is OUR VAGINAS...Yes you read right...It's high time we spent quality time talking about that too...Today, and every coming Friday, will branch and delve into this all important topic.
As women let's ask ourselves, how well do we know our bodies?? If 2 or 3 vulvas/ "vaginas" are outlined, can you identify yours?? The society we find ourselves in has made that part of our body so sacred that, we sometimes think it's a sin to look yourself up. It's important that every lady gets a mirror and looks at her "down part" once in a while so that we can differentiate the normal from the abnormal.
So back to the topic, what is the vagina?? More often than not, a lot of people refer to the whole vulva as the vagina. The vagina is the " hole" or opening in the lower part of the vulva, that connects the vulva to the cervix. So the "hole" or opening is what we refer to as the vagina. The outer part which we can see is known as the vulva, and the top part, mostly covered with hair in women who are of age is known as the MONS PUBIS. There are also the outer bigger lips of the vulva known as the LABIA MAJORA and the smaller inner lips known as the LABIA MINORA and inside that, we can locate the clitoris. With that being said, let's look at some uses of the vagina.
1. It serves as a receptacle for the penis during coitus or sex
2. It serves as an exit for menstrual flow
3. It serves as an exit for the baby during delivery
Let's note that urine however, does not flow out of the vagina. There is an opening between the clitoris and the vagina known as the urethral opening, that is where urine comes out from in women. So now we know...Between the vaginal opening and the anal opening (anus), there's a space known as the perineum. It's a small flat surface that is found in both males and females. In women during childbirth, if the midwife realizes that, the vaginal opening is too small for the baby to come through, she cuts this area, to create enough space for the baby to come out. This is known as EPISIOTOMY. After delivery, the midwife sutures it up to its original state.
We now have a fair idea about our "cherrypie" but how do we keep it clean??, How is it supposed to smell ?? What are some common practices we engage in, that puts us at risk for vaginal infections? As ladies how do we ensure that our vaginas are in good condition and healthy enough to perform the tasks we mentioned above?
