Former Ghana Football Association (GFA) chairman Dr Nyaho Nyaho Tamakloe has advised the association to slam the Black Stars door in the face of ex-coach Kwasi Appiah because, to him, he had been tried, tested, and failed.
A search party for the replacement of the Stars’ departed coach, Avram Grant, is scheduled to present its final report soon with the Al Khartoum coach said to be the favourite among the list of applicants.
But Dr Nyaho-Tamakloe, who spoke to the Graphic Sports in an interview yesterday, said it would be a travesty to sneak Appiah back to the job when he failed woefully during his tenure that led to his dismissal by the FA.
"Appiah was a complete failure when he took over the Black Stars and he was sacked for non-performance, so what has changed that he wants to come back?” the outspoken football administrator queried.
In his view, the 56-year old ex-Ghana international cannot be entrusted with the Stars technical job again because "he lacked the ability to read through games and design proper strategies to counter his opponents during matches”, and recounted one instance during the World Cup match against the USA which he said Appiah appeared bankrupt of ideas.
Dr Nyaho-Tamakloe said the former Ghana left back and captain also lacked the clout to control his players as vividly manifested at the World Cup when the undisciplined acts of some players, including Michael Essien, Sulley Muntari and Kevin-Prince Boateng, made the country a source of ridicule at the world stage.
"Appiah was unable to control his players to the extent that they disregarded his instructions with impunity," Mr Nyaho-Tamakloe iterated and added that Appiah lacked the confidence, which must be the greatest hallmark of a good coach.
According to him, the argument of relying solely on a local coach must be discarded, "because Ghana deserves the best and we must always look for the best for this country", thus recommending Uganda coach Milutin Sredojevic as the most ideal candidate for the job.
His reason was because the coach brought raw talents to the AFCON 2017 but managed to perform much better and thought he should be considered.
However, Dr Nyaho-Tamakloe advised Coach Appiah to shed the African culture of not knowing when to quit but should be bold to say “enough is enough” to allow someone else to continue.
